My Online Dating Experience

A couple of years ago, one of my co-workers recommended I try online dating. He informed me that he met his wife that way and that I should at least give it a shot. So, I did. It was definitely not the experience I was expecting when I signed up!

To begin with, there are many people on there who messaged me to add a third person to their current relationship. I’m not judging anyone at all, but it wasn’t what I was expecting. Especially because you put what you are looking for on your profile, and that was definitely not something I put on my profile.

I did eventually connect with a guy. We had a lot in common and began texting. He lived a few hours away from me, but told me his job would be transferring him to my city in the next several months. I figured that would be a good amount of time to chat and get to know one another. Which we did. We progressed to phone calls and seemed to get along well. He informed me he didn’t have any social media, which is a little weird, but not a big red flag to me.

One day he told me he would be coming into my city for the weekend. We agreed to meet up. I texted a friend of mine and said, “Hey, I’m meeting up with this guy. Here’s the password to my phone in case anything happens.” Just trying to play it safe. I texted him and said, “I told my friend we were meeting up and gave her the password to my phone in case you’re a serial killer. Lol!” What I thought was a completely innocent joke. But, if you know about my history and what happened with my mom, it was just me being prepared. He didn’t like that joke. He got upset, cancelled our meetup, and deleted his entire dating profile.

Did I just dodge a bullet here? I was seriously baffled by his response. We never spoke again after that day. I wonder if he had some malicious plans for me. After that, I decided that I wasn’t brave enough to ever try online dating again.

Have you ever tried online dating? What was your experience like?
