5 Ways to Self Care

I think that self care is very important. Especially if you’re someone like me, that suffers from depression and anxiety. These things can take over your mind and affect you physically. So, taking the time to take care of your self and practice self care is super important. Today I’m going to share 5 ways that I practice self care.

1. Journaling

Journaling helps with my anxiety a ton. I honestly didn’t think it would be helpful to me at all, but it’s a way for me to get the things cluttering my mind onto paper. It’s like I take them out of my brain and put them somewhere else, so I think about them less. Worry about them less. It also gives me the opportunity to read through things later and realize what’s important and what are things that I’m worrying about for no reason. Things that aren’t very important.

2. Yoga/Meditation

I started doing yoga a few months ago and it has worked wonders. I try to do 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes before bed each day. I don’t always get to, but I notice a difference on the days I am able to. I also do meditation every once in awhile. It is a great way to clear my head, especially when I’m having a particularly bad day.

3. Learning to Say “No”

This one is huge, in my opinion. I’m a people pleaser. I don’t like disappointing people. I don’t like hurting them. I don’t like saying no. But, I’ve learned over the years, that not saying no is actually hurting ME. I overwork myself. I try too hard. I don’t allow myself time to rest and recuperate. Learning to say no to things has helped me in so many ways. It also allows me to do #4 on this list.

4. Making Time for Yourself

I don’t know about y’all, but I NEED time to myself. I need time alone (with my dogs, of course). I need time to rest. I need time to prepare for the work week. I need time to mentally reset. If I don’t make time for myself each weekend, I have an absolutely miserable week. Doing this also gives me the opportunity to spend time doing things that I love.

5. Doing Things YOU Love

If you are constantly go, go, go for other people, do you ever get time to do any of the things you love? Probably not. Or, at least not much of the time. Making time to spend on the things you love doing is very beneficial to your overall happiness. Reading, writing, running, watching TV - whatever it may be, make sure you take the time to do it. You need to enjoy your life.

I typically use Sundays as a day of self care each week. I make sure to do as many things on this list as I can. And, I’m telling you, it makes the work weeks so much better for me mentally and physically.
